Birthday Outfit

So this was what I chose to wear when turning Twenty Two this Saturday. I really loved the whole 50's American diner, cadillac car prints, Grease Lightning vibe, heavily showcased among Prada's latest S/S 12 collection. So imagine my delight when I spotted this little replica skirt hidden among the depths of Primark's jumble! It was an instant 'must have', and I was already planning in my head what to wear it with as soon as I saw it...as it happens, a white blazer which I also managed to get a bargain with from Primarni!
Skirt & blazer: both Primark, jersey cropped tee & ankle socks: both Topshop
Love the lemon background, perfectly pastel!
I wanted to team the skirt with a slightly funkier, casual top half, as being a pleated midi skirt it does have the potential to become rather dowdy looking...so remember to keep the balance of staying true to your age as well as mixing it up; although granny chic has it's many plus points, it has to be done in a certain way, there are after all good granny looks and bad granny looks! So I went for this cute little jersey cropped tee from Topshop, in an oatmeal hue to tone down the pastels. This mix of shape and fabric creates a great youthful look, while incorporating a massive summer staple (the midi). Also by showing a little midriff -nothing EVER below the belly button, helps to create a fun look, nothing too serious!
A lightweight blazer is ideal for this look, as it is in keeping with the prim, preppy, slightly 50's look and smartens it up. But just remember to show just a smidgen of flesh to avoid looking like you are older than your years.
This look is perfect for an overload of jewellery, as it is very 'clean' and proper, so allow your inner magpie to take over and mix it up a little!
Ankle socks are SO S/S 12!! I literally love this little micro trend with a passion. I will be sporting a different pair of pastel socks every day of the week as soon as Mr. Sunshine decides to stay out longer than a day! This is a great way to add a subtle dose of quirkiness into your outfit - and so simple to do! Just pick a key colour from your outfit and slip on some socks to match with a pair of contrasting shoes and your good to go. Works best with peep toes, T-bars and brogues; avoid socks with mary janes or ballet pumps, unless you want to look like Pollyanna! This look is sophisticated girliness, so requires a heel-the only exception are brogues for a more androgynous look!
